Tattoo using VR technology allows a guy to play Sonic: Super Hedgehog – the facts

However, this time, real leather is used for control. Well, sort of. A tattoo with additional reality will allow you to play Sonic. A guy named Olo Sabandia posted on Twitter his tattoo, which allows you to get in touch with VR technology, and it’s even cooler than you might think. He created it using Unity software, which is often used to develop video games. The bottom line is this: his real tattoo, which is made in the form of a gamepad, serves as a marker that the augmented reality program recognizes. The smartphone scans the tattoo area and recognizes the fragments as controls. The tattoo doesn’t just look amazing, it gives you the opportunity to play the old version of Sonic. Of course, while we cannot talk about the game in full, at the moment Olo taught the hedgehog only to jump.

At first glance, it may seem that this whole concept exists in the virtual world, but take a closer look – this is indeed the hand of Olo. This is cool in itself, and with a gamepad like this, it’s very easy to reset everything and start over if you’re not happy with the result. Our journalist Dan Casey talked with Sabandia about the development of the tattoo, what difficulties he faced, why he chose Sega management.

What was the most difficult thing when designing a tattoo sketch?

I wanted to choose a drawing that would mean something important to me, because it will stay with me forever, but it also had to be something that VR technology recognizes. It had to be something with straight lines, sharp edges, and high contrast. I made some sketches that looked good on paper, but they didn’t work when transferred to the skin temporarily, so I tried to make my sketch more primitive. It is easier for the program to recognize some basic forms.

Why did you choose the NES gamepad?

I was once the most dedicated fan of the SEGA console, so when I thought about interactive tattooing, the Genesis gamepad immediately came to mind. Unfortunately, using only straight lines did not convey its essence. I couldn’t render the Genesis controller in a way that would be recognized by the software, so I had to turn to Plan B. The NES controller is a kind of iconic thing, and it also has a suitable silhouette. I actually drew it out of several squares so that the lines are the same distance from each other in all places. I also have a lot of fond memories of when my cousins and I carefully thought about which cartridge to take for the weekend, we could only choose that. Sometimes we chose a good game, sometimes we didn’t..

Planning to make the rest of the game functions available?

In theory, I can fully play, but I still need to learn for this, and this is more suitable for games like Arkanoid or Space Invaders, where you only need to move from side to side and sometimes down. I can fully activate the D-pad, but if only the upper part is working without using the ones on the sides, many games will be impossible to play. Even the fact that I made Sonic jump is already amazing.
